Is Silicone Pastry Mat Material Harmful to Human Body?

Silicone pastry mat is a common material mat in the family. This mat material is also very safe to use and can be used to knead the dough before baking.

Inorganic silica gel in silicone pastry mat is a highly active adsorbent material. It is usually made by reacting sodium silicate with sulfuric acid and undergoing a series of post-treatment processes such as aging and acid bubbles. Silica gel is an amorphous substance, and its chemical formula is mSiO2.nH2O. It is insoluble in water and any solvents, non-toxic and tasteless, and has stable chemical properties. Except for strong alkali and hydrofluoric acid, it does not react with any substance. Various types of silica gel have different microporous structures due to different manufacturing methods. The chemical composition and physical structure of silica gel determine that it has many characteristics that are difficult to replace with other similar materials: high adsorption performance, good thermal stability, stable chemical properties, and high mechanical strength.

The basic structural unit of the silicone pad product is composed of silicon-oxygen links, and the side chain is connected to various other organic groups through silicon atoms. Therefore, the structure of silicone products contains both "organic groups" and "inorganic structures". This special composition and molecular structure make it combine the characteristics of organic matter with the function of inorganic matter.

Both of the above silicones are safe and stable. The non-toxic material can maintain its stability even if it is placed in water for a long time. However, it should be noted that the placement conditions of silica gel can not be heated at high temperatures. If the silica gel is heated at high temperatures, toxins will be produced.
